『フィル・スペクターの記念すべき第一歩にして、全米NO.1に輝いた‘To Know Him Is To Love Him’(58年)をDoreというマイナーレーベルからリリースした後、大手のインペリアルと契約し、制作されたのが本作(59年)。よって‘To Know Him …’が未収なのは残念だが、その曲が持っていたロマンチックなムードを全編に散りばめたアルバムの、嬉しい世界初CD化だ。モノ/ステレオ両ヴァージョンに加え、シングルのみの⑬も収録。テディ・ベアーズは、スペクター、マーシャル・リーブ、アネット・クレインバードの3人組で、その後マーシャルはプロデュ―サー、アネットはキャロル・コナーズ名義でシンガー/作詞家として活躍するなど、才能豊かな面々が集まったグループだった。本作では、‘To Know Him …’タイプのオリジナルとカヴァーという構成で、ロックン・ロール以前の古き良きアメリカを想起させるイノセントなヴォーカルとミニマムな演奏、独特のエコーが、えもいわれぬ世界を創出している。』

ザ・ロネッツは、ヴェロニカ(ロニー)、エステル、ネドラの3人従妹姉妹で結成され1961年にレコードデビューをする。ヒットに恵まれなかったグループは、フィル・スペクターのプロダクションに連絡したところ、スペクターは会う事を承諾。そこで行われたオーディションでロニーの声にスペクターが興味を持ち、ロネッツは彼の持つフィレス（Philles）レコードと契約を交わす事となる。1963年にフィレスレコードからの彼女達の最初のシングル「ビー・マイ・ベイビー」がリリースされ、同年の８月にビルボードチャートで最高2位、イギリスでも4位の大ヒットを記録するに至った。所謂「ウォール・オブ・サウンド」と呼ばれるフィル・スペクターの快進撃のスタートとなる。その後も「ベイビー・アイ・ラブ・ユー」「恋の雨音」「アイ・キャン・ヒー・ザ・ミュージック」(後にザ・ビーチ・ボーイズでヒット)等シングルをリリースしヒットを記録し、1966年夏、ビートルズ最後のコンサートツアーの前座として北米を周ったのを最後に、1967年に活動休止。2004年には「ロックの殿堂」入りを果たしている。
本CD[Presenting the Fabulous Ronettes]は、1～12曲目がザ・ロネッツの唯一のスタジオ録音である同名アルバムからの全12曲(曲順違い有)、シングルでリリースされた13/14と1963年にリリースされたフィレス・レコード・アーティストによるクリスマスLP[A Christmas Gift For You from Phil Spector]からロネッツ録音の3曲、そして1967年解散後に発掘された未発表音源15～22の7曲の計25曲を網羅した超拡大盤です。同じジャケットのCDが数多くリリースされている中でもレアな音源を含んでいる<国内VACUUM RECORDS>希少盤です。最終シングル「アイ・キャン・ヒー・ザ・ミュージック」が含まれていないのが残念ですが、そちらのほうはビクター国内盤 [Best of SPECTOR SOUND] VDP-1054に収録されています。因みに、このLP[Presenting the Fabulous Ronettes]の演奏は後に<レッキング・クルー>と呼ばれるスタジオ・ミュージシャン集団で、あの印象的な「ビー・マイ・ベイビー」のイントロはハル・プレインのドラムで始まります。
テディ・ベアーズの代表曲、
「つのる想い=To Know Him Is To Love Him」は、フィル・スペクターの作品の中でも最も有名で多くのアーティストにカヴァーされた名曲です。70年代のレコード時代のビートルズの海賊盤に(「会ったとたんに一目ぼれ」名義)早くから収録されていた(現在では1994年発売CDのLive At The BBCに収録)りピーターとゴードンや日本ではアン・ルイス、モコ・ビーバー・オリーブなどのカヴァーも存在しています。

"Phil Spector's memorable first step was the release of 'To Know Him Is To Love Him' (1958), which reached No. 1 in the US, on a minor label called Dore, and then he signed with the major label Imperial and produced this album (1959). It's a shame that 'To Know Him...' is not available, but this is the world's first CD release of the album, which is filled with the romantic mood of that song. In addition to both mono and stereo versions, the single ⑬ is also included. The Teddy Bears were a trio consisting of Spector, Marshall Reeve, and Annette Kleinbird. Marshall later became a producer, and Annette became a singer/lyricist under the name Carol Connors. The group was made up of many talented people. This album is a mix of originals and covers of songs like "To Know Him...", and the innocent vocals, minimalist performance, and unique echoes that evoke the good old America before rock and roll create an indescribable world. '

② is The Ronettes, formed by three cousins, Veronica (Ronnie), Estelle, and Nedra, and made their record debut in 1961. The group, which had not had a hit, contacted Phil Spector's production company, and Spector agreed to meet with them. Spector was interested in Ronnie's voice during the audition, and the Ronettes signed a contract with his Philles Records. Their first single, "Be My Baby," was released on Philles Records in 1963, and in August of that year it reached number two on the Billboard charts and number four in the UK. This marked the start of Phil Spector's so-called "Wall of Sound" surge. They continued to release hit singles such as "Baby I Love You," "Raindrops," and "I Can Hear the Music" (later a hit with The Beach Boys), and in the summer of 1966, they toured North America as the opening act for The Beatles' final concert tour, and then went on hiatus in 1967. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2004.
This CD [Presenting the Fabulous Ronettes] is a super expanded edition that includes 25 songs in total, including all 12 songs (with a different order) from the album of the same name, which is The Ronettes' only studio recording, 13/14, 3 songs recorded by The Ronettes from the Christmas LP [A Christmas Gift For You from Phil Spector] released by Philles Records Artists in 1963, and 7 unreleased tracks (15-22) unearthed after the band's breakup in 1967. This is a rare CD from <Japan VACUUM RECORDS> that includes rare tracks among the many CDs released with the same jacket. It's a shame that the final single "I Can Hear the Music" is not included, but that is included in the Victor Japan release [Best of SPECTOR SOUND] VDP-1054. Incidentally, this LP [Presenting the Fabulous Ronettes] was performed by a group of talented studio musicians who would later be called the Wrecking Crew, and the intro to the memorable "Be My Baby" begins with Hal Plain's drums.
The Teddy Bears' signature song, "To Know Him Is To Love Him," is one of Phil Spector's most famous songs, and has been covered by many artists. It was included early on in the Beatles' bootlegs (under the name "Love at First Sight") during the 1970s record era (now included on the CD Live At The BBC released in 1994), and there are also covers by Peter and Gordon, and in Japan by Anne Lewis and Moko Beaver Olive.
